Just woke up to find that another one of my clients sites has gone down due to them reaching their monthly bandwidth limit, this is the 2nd client this has happened to in two weeks and I am feeling pretty pleased with myself, you know you are doing your job properly when your clients are having to get better hosting packages.
The 1st time it happened it was like an instant thing, the clients article was published and within less then 45 minutes it hit the homepage of Reddit and the site was gone. The clients web hosting company has been giving him stick ever since, “You better just do a few more directory submissions for now” he said to me, a dedicated server is in the post.
This time it was more gradual, the article didn’t go to the homepage of Digg or Reddit, but it did go popular on StumbleUpon, Propeller and some other social media websites. It took from Thursday when the article 1st got published to this morning for the site to go down. I will give him a call in the next hour or so to let him know, I am sure he will be O.K. with it, the big picture is what matters the most.

Reddit is a social news site where entries get submitted and voted on, if a story gets enough votes then it can make it onto the 1st page and receive a huge amount of traffic. I know a blogger who is a regular on the front page there and it’s not the best for link building, but it can send a large amount of traffic.
Many people complain about Digg’s bury brigade but what about Reddit’s ban brigade? In many ways I can understand why Digg bury some of the stories that get submitted (although the auto-bury thing does seem a little harsh) but Reddit just flat out ban sites and some of the time for no good reason.
This site is banned from reddit a long with quite a few of my friends blogs, today I tried to submit a blog post from Search Engine Land and realised that even they were banned. Has Danny Sullivan been spamming Reddit? I seriously doubt it.
So they are sometimes banning sites for reasons that are outside of the site owners control, also I didn’t do anything to deserve to be banned from Reddit, I did submit a couple of my own articles but this is not a violation of their user agreement, my blogger friend (the one who does very well) submits 5 or 6 of his own articles a day and Reddit do not have a problem with this (some of the users are getting annoyed with him though).
I have tried to contact Reddit twice about this and both times I have had no response, Digg have excellent customer service and both times I have contacted them I have had a swift response (within 5 minutes), even if I never got the response I was looking for (That story was reported and subsequently removed by the Digg community.) I was still pleased that they got back to me and so quickly. The least Reddit could do is send me an email back saying you are a spamming scum bag so your site has been banned.
Unjustified banning aside reddit is an awesome site with many great users.

It is nearly two weeks since the new Digg was launched and now that I have got used to it I think it is a big improvement, once the picture channel and the new comment system get added it will be even better. Here are 5 good reasons why the new Digg interface rocks.
1/ Hot entries are now shown in all channels
With the old system you could only see what was hot in upcoming on the homepage and in the main topic channels, with the new one all of the channels have a hot section in upcoming. This gives you the ability to pick up on popular stories much sooner.
2/ Videos are now shown on the homepage
Some of the videos submitted definitely deserve a little bit of homepage exposure and the ones that I have seen on there so far have all been worth a watch (if you do not like seeing videos on the homepage you can set your homepage to the news channel, you do this by going to your profile and clicking on manage topics).
3/ Navigating to different channels is easier
The new system makes it much quicker and easier to access the different channels, you click on the drop down menu next to the news channel, you click on a main topic channel and you then have access to all of the sub topic channels without leaving the page that you are on.
4/ Seeing what your friends are up to is easier
With the old system you used to have to click on profile, then click on friends and then click on submitted to see what your friends were submitting. With the new system you can access all of your friends activity from any page on the site simply by clicking the drop down menu next to the friends activity button at the top of the page.
5/ You can now bury spam entries with one click
It is now quicker and easier to bury spam entries and once you have buried them they disappear so that you no longer have to have your eyes offended by the sight of them.

I have had my head buried in the sand for the last few days (working on a new project) and I have only just discovered Sphinn.com it’s a new social media site just for search engine marketing that I expect will be a huge success, already the site seems to be taking off and many of the most notable SEO’s in the industry have registered. The site itself is awesome in terms of both design and functionality, I particularly like the profile pages that are totally geared up for link builders. Digg and Reddit can be a nightmare sometimes because the vast majority of the members hate SEO’s and it will be nice to have a descent shot at getting some of my SEO articles noticed. If you are interested in SEO/SEM I suggest you get yourself over there and register, there are some great articles flying about and it looks like a good place to learn.
